Formed in early 2002 by their late drummer Robin and guitarist Ade, Noxa are recognised as one of the paragons of Indonesian grindcore. Taking on social and political themes as the narratives of their music, including social life, social criticism, humanity, and youth, the duo would then recruit the late Tony on vocals and Dipa on bass to form Noxa. The band’s name was chosen due to a shared interest between the members in the word’s meaning, which is “something that exerts a harmful effect on the body”.
After initially playing covers of songs by the likes of Napalm Death and Nasum, they began recording their self-titled debut album in November 2003. It was released in August 2003 under their own label Noxa Records, followed by several shows in Malaysia and Singapore. In 2006, they released their sophomore album “Grind Viruses”, which was rereleased by Finnish label Stay Heavy Records in 2008. During the same year, they performed at Tuska Open Air Metal Festival.
Following Robin’s unfortunate demise in a motorcycle accident, he was replaced by Alvin Eka Putra in mid-2009. After performing at Obscene Extreme Festival in the Czech Republic in 2010, the band unleashed their third album “Legacy” in July 2011 via Off The Records. In late 2019, Tony left the band due to his deteriorating health – he passed away in 2020 – and was replaced by Diego Shefa eight months after Tony’s departure. With a new vocalist in tow, the band released their comeback single “Greed” in October 2021, followed by “Justice” in November 2021.
